Q & A Press Release
2011 HOLLYWOOD REEL INDEPENDENT FILM FESTIVAL
Q: Tell us about your festival?
A: The festival runs from December 6th – 15th 2011 in Hollywood, CA at the New
Beverly Cinema and the Regent Showcase Cinema.
It is a film festival in Hollywood California that focuses on new works made for
fewer than 5 million dollars that are currently without current major Hollywood
distribution.
Known for it's quality film program selections aimed at the independent film
lover, the Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival showcases the best new
and unknown feature films and shorts, documentaries and videos in every genre
(from comedy to horror) from filmmakers all over the world who posses an
independent vision and are creating innovative work outside the studio system,
while creating a balanced program that balances studio-level professionally
crafted work along side raw, low-budget films of merit.
HRIFF honors these filmmakers with 20 awards, and honors the Best Picture of
the year with a cash prize of $200.00 and an option for additional screenings.
The Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival is attended by executives from
motion picture studios and distribution companies, journalists and photographers
(including the Los Angeles Times, Films In Review, Hollywood.TV and others).
HRIFF has been written about in newspapers and magazines worldwide
including The Los Angeles Times, Orange County Register, Films In Review,
Metropol Hungary and has been mentioned on JustJared and comedian Joe
Rogan's blog.
Q: Could you talk to us about last year's festival?
A: The 2010 Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival was a sold-out, star-
studded success. Hilary Duff and her sister Haylie Duff (Napoleon Dynamite),
Laura Prepon (How I Met Your Mother), Mackenzie Phillips (One Day At A Time),
Danny Masterson (That 70's Show) and his brother Christopher Masterson
(Malcolm In The Middle) and Bokor Balazs (The Consulate General of Hungary)
were all in attendance at this years festival along with thousands of other
attendees, as HRIFF screened 30 films over three days at Quentin Tarintino's
New Beverly Cinema and the 900 seat Regent Showcase Theater.
Our sold-out awards program featured speeches and award presentations to
almost all of the festival winners including:
Alana Morshead and Alanna Masterson the director and star of Best Picture
winner Peach Plum Pear, the cast and crew of Mum's Birthday who came out
from Scotland to accept the Best Actor Award, James MacDonald winner of our
Best Director award for his amazing film Heavy Lifting and his star Jenny O'Hara
who won for Best Supporting Actress. Todd Johnson the director and star of the
People's Choice Award for Best Picture A Connection charmed the crowd. Aaron
Kennedy director of the Best Comedy Film A Bum Lives in My Front Yard was
there to accept his award, as was Best Experimental Award winner Scott Klinger
for his sublime film Memento Mori.
Best Supporting Actor Phillip Bender and his director Markus Pajtler came out
from Germany to accept his acting award for A Damn Killer. The Producers of
Best Short Film winner Metamorphosis: Immersive Kafka showed up with an
interactive booth where you could assume the perspective of multiple characters
in scenes from their technically ground-breaking short film, and the band Laco$te
who won for best music video not only showed up but also performed at the
festival wrap party.

Q: Why Should Filmmakers Choose the Hollywood Reel Independent Film
Festival?
A: Being based in Hollywood, CA the Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival
is attended by comparatively large number of celebrities, studio representatives
and independent filmmakers that may not normally attend film festivals in other
cities.
But by choosing to be a festival that excludes films from major film studios, films
with full American distribution, and films made for over 5 million dollars we offer a
much better chance then most festivals for unknown projects to be accepted and
showcased to people who may be working with the filmmakers in the future or
distributing their film.
Our close relationship to the print and online journalism communities in Los
Angeles helps us to create a festival that is heavily attended by Press in a major
American media market and that gives the filmmakers involved in the Hollywood
Reel Independent Film Festival a greater opportunity to publicize their movies
worldwide.
Having strong ties to the Los Angeles independent film scene and the film festival
community allows films submitted to the Hollywood Reel Independent Film
Festival a good chance to be recommended to be screened at other film festivals
& film events (usually forgoing the entry fee and with the filmmakers approval of
course). We even recommend films to our friends and sister festivals that don't
end up being a fit for our festival programming, but which we think may be a
better fit elsewhere.
The Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival always keep an eye out for
potential future screening and distribution opportunities for films that we do
officially select. Our Best Picture winner is guaranteed an opportunity to an
additional screening, if so desired. This is a rare thing amongst film festivals,
but HRIFF was created from a film fan community and feels its mission is the
promotion of independent films of quality. This passion is perhaps the thing that
differentiates us the most from other festivals.
In an industry dominated by small film fests that often have no outside
attendance and large festivals that are near impossible to get into without a
multi-million dollar budget and major film star, we here at the Hollywood Reel
Independent Film Festival have created through a grass-roots effort by film
lovers, a film festival renowned for its carefully curated programming that is
attended by celebrities, students who attend some of the biggest film schools
in the world and press from one of the largest media markets in the world, film
buyers and studio executives, but still is a place where filmmakers of every level
of skill have chance of being officially selected and winning major awards.
